The colour of your skin is predetermined when you are born by the amount of melanin (pigment) in the skin. However as you age certain factors can cause an over production of melanin resulting in pigmentation.

Melasma

Melasma, also called ‘chloasma’, is a common skin condition, which is seen more frequently seen in women. Melsama typically presents as brown symmetrical patches found on the cheeks, forehead and upper lip. The exact cause is not known, but several factors contribute. These include pregnancy, hormones such as the contraceptive pill, some cosmetics, (especially those containing perfume), and possibly stress. Sunshine and the use of sun-beds or lIPL/laser treatments usually worsen any tendency to melasma.

Although previously difficult to treat, Dermamelan and ZO Medical Skincare are highly effective treatments with consistently proven results.

Age Spots

Age or "liver" spots are flat, brown, oval spots, which are caused by chronic UV exposure/sun damage, and are therefore most frequently found on sun-exposed areas like the hands and face.

Unfortunately they will continue to increase with age, so if you would like to restore you skin to its previous youthful clarity arrange for a complimentary consultation so we can discuss various treatment options such as IPL Skin Rejuvenation or ZO Medical Skincare.

Freckles

There are two basic types of freckles: simple freckles and sunburn freckles. Simple freckles are usually tan coloured, round, and small (less than 5mm in diameter). Sunburn freckles are often darker, have irregular jagged borders, and may be larger (more than 5mm in diameter). Sunburn freckles are more common on the upper back and shoulders where people frequently get their most severe sunburns.

For some, freckles are considered to be endearing, however for those who find them a nuisance IPL Skin Rejuvenation is extremely effective.

Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH)

Although PIH can occur in all skin types, it is more common in darker skin types after inflammation or injury to the skin. When dark changes in your skin's colour remain after the underlying problem has gone away, you have PIH.

The most common causes are injuries such as scratches, burns, cuts, or bruises. Skin Conditions such as acne, spots or rashes (e.g. eczema, psoriasis, pityriasis rosea, lichen planus, and fungal infections) can cause PIH and so too can injury to the skin resulting from sunburns, surgery or cosmetic procedures such as chemical peels, dermabrasion, lasers and cryotherapy (liquid nitrogen treatments).

Prevention is always better than cure which is why we will often prepare patient’s skin prior to a cosmetic procedure to prevent PIH in high risk individuals. If however you are already experiencing PIH, ZO Medical Skincare is excellent at treating this type of hyperpigmentation in a safe and effective way.
