Living with hyperhidrosis? Or interested in the condition? Well, in today’s post our Essex & Rickmansworth experts reveal more about the condition, going behind the curtain to share symptoms, causes and areas for treatment. If you’d like to know more, feel free to get in touch with our skin clinic in Rickmansworth.
So, what is hyperhidrosis?
It’s basically where the body sweats too much and isn’t caused simply by common factors like increased exercise or temperature. While hyperhidrosis is the medical term for the condition, it’s also known as excessive sweating.
Where do you get hyperhidrosis?
It can be present on the palms and soles; under the arms; around the groin; or on the face. It mostly occurs equally on both sides of the body and only during waking hours (i.e., not night sweats).
How do I know if I have hyperhidrosis?
You might notice sweating is affecting your day-to-day life, like your routine, or that you feel more withdrawn than usual. Excessive sweating may start suddenly and can be extremely debilitating.
What causes hyperhidrosis?
Sometimes, the condition runs in families. Other times, there can be a link to other medical concerns: cancer, heart problems, diabetes, infections, etc.
Should I be concerned about hyperhidrosis?
Yes, if it's causing you to develop infections in your skin, or if you're noticing that the condition is making you feel embarrassed, withdrawn, depressed or in other negative ways.
How is hyperhidrosis treated?
The condition can be treated through anti-wrinkle injections or botox, which work to block signals between the nerves and the sweat glands. This helps the body produce less sweat and manage the condition. There are also some tactics you can try at home: regularly changing clothes, choosing to wear moisture-wicking fabrics; investing in a quality antiperspirant; seeing if diet has any effect on the amount you sweat. A consultation at our skin clinic could help advise you on the best things to try.
What happens during treatment?
We’ll arrange a consultation at our Rickmansworth skin clinic to first diagnose your concern and then advise on treatment. If you go ahead with anti-wrinkle injections, these can help manage your excessive sweating for several months, with results developing within a few weeks. But, repeated treatments will be needed as long as the condition persists, since it’s a non-permanent method.
