Lip fillers: what to know before your consultation

Lip fillers: what to know before your consultation

author: last updated:

Whether through a friend, family member, or media personality, you’ve discovered a connection to lip fillers. Popularised by celebrities that are becoming more and more candid about their treatments, lip fillers have become the must-have lunchtime procedure. You’ve heard of the treatment, but how much do you know about dermal fillers in general? Are they safe, and what are they made of? Here’s our professional guide to lip fillers and everything you need to know before having them.

Lip fillers are made of…

We’re all hyperaware of what we’re putting into and onto our bodies, be it our diet or skincare routine, so naturally, you’re right to be concerned about what you’re injecting into it too. Most dermal fillers, including those we use at Aesthetic MediSpa, are made of a gel-like substance that contains hyaluronic acid (or HA). Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring bodily substance that gives skin its bounce and fullness, so it was only wise to incorporate its use into injectable treatments. Because this gel so closely mirrors a natural bodily sugar, there are only minor side effects and minuscule chances of rejection.

Things to consider before booking your lip filler treatment

What kind of results are you seeking?

If you’re considering dermal fillers now, the chances are that you’ve been thinking about them for a while. This means you’ll have had a chance to think about what you’d like to achieve and what you want to change, too. Are you seeking a fuller, more glamorous pout, or is your top lip not symmetrical with your bottom lip? Are you seeking a little bit of subtle contour to help your lip borders stand out, or enhance your cupid’s bow? Coming to your consultation with a good idea of what you’d like to see in your lips helps you and your injector plan your treatment. This also allows us to make suggestions for different yet more effective approaches. For example, a fuller pout might not mean more dermal filler, but where you strategically place the filler, to begin with. It’s also important to keep in mind that you may need a few appointments to build on each session’s results before you reach your optimum results. Even celebrities’ lips you admire haven’t achieved their pout within one appointment, so it’s important to build up to this structure rather than diving straight in.

Who is performing your treatment?

This is possibly one of the most important things to consider when looking to book your first lip filler appointment. You must take the time to find an injector and a clinic that you trust and not just opt for the first or lowest price you find. Ensure you’re comfortable with your practitioner’s abilities, qualifications, and consultation before you commit to a treatment. If you’re not comfortable and confident with them, then they aren’t the practitioner for you. A medical professional trained in aesthetics is always your best bet for safe and effective treatment because they understand how to reach your desired results with a full appreciation for your health and natural facial features. Don’t compromise your comfort, always seek the professionals!

There will be some side effects.

Everyone is different, so you may experience some of these side effects more or less severe than others. That being said, however, they are fairly minor and nothing to be worried about. Some minor bruising at the injection site, swelling, and tenderness are experienced to some degree for most patients, though not everyone experiences all of these symptoms at once. These should recede after 2-3 days post-treatment. Avoiding alcohol for 2 days on either side of your treatment will minimise the risks of bruising, and a cold compress should help the swelling subside.
