What are Lip Fillers?

One question that seems to bring a lot of people to our website is "what are lip fillers"? So we thought we'd give you a quick rundown on what they are, how they're used, and why you might want them.

Lip Fillers Overview

Lip fillers are used in a treatment often called "lip augmentation", and they're a kind of dermal filler that we use here at Aesthetic MediSpa.

Essentially, if you're unhappy with the size and shape of your lips, fillers can give you a plumper pout. If you feel like your lips a lopsided, we can even them up. One thing that people worry about with lip fillers is the potential for the awful "trout pout", where your lips look swollen and unnatural. The way to avoid this is to always visit a doctor-led clinic, and make sure whoever does your treatment is a skilled professional.

As an example, our doctor has over 15 years of experience and has developed a very keen eye for what will and won't work for each unique individual. Our whole philosophy is to enhance your natural beauty, not make you look like you've had a cosmetic procedure.

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are sterile gels that are injected to increase volume, plumpness and youthfulness. They contain hyaluronic acid, which is found naturally in the body but is depleted as we age.

There are many different fillers on the market, however, we use products such as Emervel, Restylane and Juvederm, that have been manufactured by major pharmaceutical companies and as such have undergone years of rigorous independent research, are FDA approved and are proven to be safe and effective.

We've chosen to only offer fillers with the highest of safety profiles, just like we do with all our treatments. All of our fillers also contain a local anaesthetic, to make sure your treatment is as comfortable as possible.

What are the side effects or risks?

There are risks associated with any injectable, or other cosmetic procedure, that are inevitable. However, due to the extensive experience of our team and the high-quality products we use, we have been able to dramatically minimise the risks of side effects. There is the potential for some swelling that takes a few days to completely subside, due to the greater sensitivity of the lips.

Inexperienced practitioners can potentially cause other issues, such as uneven or lumpy lips. This is generally due to not knowing the best approach for a given individual, not having the experience to see how much filler to use and where, and using cheaper products.

What would happen if I didn't like the outcome?

We'd always hope that you would love the outcome of your lip fillers, and the vast majority of people do. But, in the unlikely event that you don't, there is a way to reverse the process. Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved by an injectable enzyme called hyaluronidase (hyaline). On average, fillers last up to a year, so if you don't like your new lips there is hope.
